A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the mayor of Miami-Dade experienced a Donald Trump moment this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Future Secured
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said the event host, in a notably cheerful message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, diverse, and based in heritage that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark tradition and kindness in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and cafecito as they marked Six Seven’s big moment.
