A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The blast was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the house near the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who escaped after the blast was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been taken to the hospital.

The explosion could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the scene showed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to financial obligations incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the siblings set off the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the explosion immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of national police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the detonation had occurred on a story above the doorway and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister Guido Crosetto united with other government officials in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
