Gavin Newsom States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known Democratic figure, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 after the 2026 midterm elections conclude.

"Yeah, I would be lying if I denied it," the governor remarked when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I can't do that."

Newsom's current term as California's leader wraps up in early 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would boost Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to cut federal funds from California and warned eliminating the power to issue CDLs.

"I'm about to pull $160m from California," he stated, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that resulted in three deaths and four injuries.

The governor's team noted that the federal government had approved the driver's employment multiple times, which enabled him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had before announced he was holding back $40m from California for ignoring language proficiency rules for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a previous comment countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the only state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Campaign Considerations

A this month's poll revealed that a majority of the party and almost half of voters believed that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has dropped from an typical level of over 40% to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for the next presidential election.

He noted his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a person who got 960 on his SAT, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the idea that you would even throw that out is, by itself, remarkable," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I am eager to see who presents themselves in the next election and who rises to the occasion. And that's the question for the voters."
