Putin Pledges Continuous Energy Deliveries to India in Defiance of Washington Pressure

In a defiant statement to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin informed PM Narendra Modi that Russia is prepared to guarantee “uninterrupted” deliveries of crude oil to India. These remarks came during a summit where both heads of state met in the Indian capital and asserted their partnership were “resilient to outside influence.”

A Message Aimed at the West

This affirmation, delivered Friday, appeared to be targeted at Washington, who have tried to pressure New Delhi into reducing its longstanding ties with Moscow. This comes follows earlier American measures, notably additional trade penalties targeting New Delhi due to its purchase of Russian oil.

“Russia is a reliable exporter of oil and gas and all required for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin remarked. “Moscow stands willing to keep guaranteeing the consistent delivery of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not mentioning oil explicitly, supported the theme by noting that “energy security has been a strong and important cornerstone of the India-Russia cooperation.”

Defying Washington's Stance

Prior to the meeting, via a media interview, Putin had questioned Washington's stance on India's dealings with Russia. The president questioned, “When Washington has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, then why can't India claim the equivalent access?”

This trip was his initial trip to India following the start of the situation in Ukraine, and Moscow and Delhi engaged in a visible effort to project that the personal rapport between the two leaders persisted strongly.

A Personal Greeting

Employing an rare step, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin right off the plane. Both leaders embraced warmly like old friends before having a private dinner on Thursday evening.

The Indian prime minister later described India's relationship with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “built on shared respect and profound confidence.”

Expanding Strategic Ties

The bilateral summit produced a number of significant pacts in the fields of military and trade relations. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme aimed at 2030, which aims to increase twofold mutual trade to one hundred billion dollars each year by the 2030 deadline.

Furthermore agreed to restructure their strategic cooperation. While Russia is still India's primary exporter of arms, the volume has declined over the past decade as India aims to widen its supply base.

The official release emphasized an agreement on the joint production of sophisticated defence platforms, although explicit reference of purchases such as the Sukhoi Su-57 were not made.

Ultimately, Moscow and Delhi reiterated that amid the “present intricate, strained, and volatile geopolitical situation, Russian-Indian ties continue to be strong to outside forces.”
