The gravest possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by researchers, including a searing 4C rise in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot rise in sea level. Another scenario envisions a drop of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy needs.
Credible Outcomes, Not Predictions
These impacts, certain ones are associated with climate tipping points, are considered as low probability but plausible. The researchers said that these projections filled a gap in planning that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The severe weather events we have outlined arenât predictions, but they are plausible," commented the lead researcher who directed the research. "Britain has been making preparations lacking the frameworks to assess worst-case scenarios. Another collection of worst-case scenarios maps the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that thermometer readings could soar in certain periods by up to 6C higher than the norm, while precipitation could be three times standard measurements.
The probability of the catastrophic events coming to pass could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be taken to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This analysis was compared to security threat evaluations or scenario planning for economic stability.

- Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could happen if international cooperation fails or if powerful amplifying effects such as the Amazon basin perishing release its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heat domes and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the AMOC, is weakening and becoming unstable due to ocean warming. A collapse commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be completely altered," said Arnell.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if polar ice in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, inundating low-lying areas. Differing from the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by coastal engineers.

The study formulated the severe projections using a blend of past data and records, computer simulations and established principles. The scenarios exclude broader worldwide issues like the global food shortages and resource wars.
The project was requested as part of a official climate resilience programme. Independent analyses have warned that insufficient focus was being allocated to lowâlikelihood but highâimpact risks.
Official experts has stated that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and examine the risks for four degrees. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "insufficient" by some observers.
