The Gunners' Disputed Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Is Ending This Coming Year

Arsenal Football Club has confirmed that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in June this upcoming year.

Context and Criticism

The partnership, reportedly valued at around ten million pounds each year, began in 2018 and has since faced significant scrutiny.

Such scrutiny arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 militia in continuing hostilities in the eastern part of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Earlier this year, Arsenal faced allegations of delivering an "outrageous" snub to the government of the DRC by declining to meet with Foreign Minister ThérÚse Kayikwamba Wagner to address the sponsorship.

Deal Composition and Aims

Visit Rwanda serves as a division of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.

There is broad consensus that Arsenal signed and upheld this partnership mainly to grow their fanbase in Africa.

However, the partnership has now terminated after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Jointly, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – supporting environmental protection and eco-friendly travel, encouraging numerous followers to explore Rwanda, and building a solid groundwork for tourism growth,” read an club announcement.

The statement continued that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing community soccer programs that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and inspire greater participation in sports throughout the nation.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, described the partnership as a “significant journey” and stated it had been “propelling” the club's ambitions.

But that is not how a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace holding rallies outside the North London venue during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in April's conclusion.

Protesters displayed a placard declaring “Terminate the Visit Rwanda Partnership” and distributed armbands to hide the Rwanda branding on uniforms.

Wider Landscape and Additional Teams

In the same month, Paris Saint-Germain extended their sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda for several more years.

At the same time, the Madrid-based team entered a new agreement for the identical duration that has resulted in the emblem appearing on the La Liga side's first-team and women's team jerseys.
