The Latest Casual Playlist Sparks Intense Debates Regarding Bots, XP Rewards, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, the game developers introduced a new playlist titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but includes a few notable adjustments:
- Every squad has only eight human participants, with the remaining made up of AI-controlled opponents.
- Activities done by real players award full XP, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Only two maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Dogtags, accolades, and stat tracking have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist delivers on its title: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it gives additional choices for players seeking alternative methods to have fun with the title. However, if video games have taught us anything, it's that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, many BF6 players are upset.
Community Reactions: Anger to Support
"Gamers prefer human opponents. Avoid making the mistakes of your rivals," reads one reply to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing concept," says another. At the same time, on the Battlefield subreddit, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are going with this game," while someone else details everything they believe to be broken in Battlefield 6: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this AI-heavy playlist."
However, for every complaint, there are players explaining how much they're enjoying the recent addition. "It's enjoyable to warm up, real players prevent it from being a total farmfest but it's very relaxed," reads one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who have lives and don't play this title all the time. Allow them to find a middle ground," states another. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with busy schedules, this is great for me," and someone else praises the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Constructive Criticisms and Community Input
All that said, players have valid points to complain about Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it will make queue times more extended for other modes due to the sheer number of options in the game already. On a similar note, some areas often face mostly bots in the current modes. Additionally, it appears a little backwards that the mode won't start without a required amount of human gamers, despite it primarily centers on combat against bots.
Finally, one of the biggest complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to offer full XP, including AI matches, but that got canned when they tried to remove XP farming from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the player base compromising in the middle, according to a Reddit comment. Another describes this mode as the devs "making a mistake so hard, I had so much fun in the first couple of days, what prompted them to adjust it?"
Looking Ahead: Adjustments Occur?
Should Battlefield Studios has proven anything so far with the latest installment, it's that they're paying attention and responding to player input. Tasks that were overly hard got fixed very quickly, as did the required Redsec challenges. It is likely that, should analytics shows this new playlist isn't performing to their standards, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
