Ultra-Conservative Former Legislator José Antonio Kast Chosen as Chile's New Leader.
In a decisive final ballot, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Triumph
With over 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast won 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having in the past been beaten by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Centered On Security and Migration
Known for his strong Catholic views and praise for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly centered on promises to combat growing crime and significantly restrict migration.
He repeatedly pointed to migrants, notably the around 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans featured controversial measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Broader Trend
Numerous commentators interpret Kast's success as aligning with a broader rightward shift in Latin America, following recent political wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts also view it as a continuation of the established swing of power between left-wing and right-wing administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Strong Mandate
In spite of his clear popular vote victory, Kast will not have an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are combined together.
This legislative reality might challenge his plans, including a promise to slash public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not provided a clear explanation.
"There are many things about how a Kast administration will operate that are uncertain because he has not said his methods for do them," noted a political science professor.
The analyst continued, "Regarding the economy, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts common for the right. But the area with much less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his flagship issue during the campaign."
